Tile Guide

Tile continues to be a top choice for kitchens and bathrooms, but you can use it anywhere in your home. It is a reliable flooring option in areas with moisture as it is resistant to both moisture and heat. At the same time, tile offers tremendous versatility when it comes to design variety. Whether you need something plain or something unique that looks like real wood, there's a perfect tile option for your setting.

Our tile collection at World of Carpets Carpet One Floor & Home in Santa Rosa is not restricted to just flooring, it can be installed on walls, backsplashes, baths, showers, and even outdoors on patios. Floor tiles tend to be larger and more durable, while wall and backsplash tiles are usually smaller and more decorative.

Expert Advice - Choose the Perfect Tile

Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some information on the three basic types of tile flooring: ceramic, porcelain, and stone.

Types of Tile

There are three main types of tile: ceramic, porcelain, and stone.

Ceramic tile and porcelain tile are the most common and popular residential types, and they are among the first flooring choices for kitchens and bathrooms. Porcelain and ceramic are made from the same materials, but porcelain is denser. Since porcelain is denser and more durable, it can handle heavy moisture, so it is actually practical for outdoor settings such as patios. Both ceramic and porcelain are available in traditional tile looks, as well as wood and stone looks.

Stone tile is made from real stone, so unlike ceramic and porcelain, it offers unique, one-of-a-kind looks that can add value to your home. Stone is usually treated and sealed to protect against spills, stains, and scratches, so it will last a long time if properly maintained. Although it may be an expensive option, it adds value to your home.

Where Can Tile Be Installed?

One of tiles many advantages includes its installation versatility. Since it can withstand moisture and heat, tile can pretty much be installed anywhere in the home. Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms are typically where you would install tile, but it also can be installed in living rooms and basements. Porcelain tile is even durable enough for outdoor settings such as patios and decks, and it can also handle the foot traffic you'd expect in commercial settings.

As we have mentioned before, tile can be installed on walls and backsplashes, and it can be used to create custom showers and baths. Shower tile should be a porcelain that absorbs less than 0.5% moisture which is considered waterproof. For smaller areas, be sure to consider decorative tiles such as mosaic tile and glass tile. Mosaic tiles are strictly meant for walls and showers and should not be installed as flooring.
